Quilting Workshops

The following are a few of the workshops that are taught by Kathy Klassen. You can check out the supply lists by clicking on the titles of the classes to go to the supply list page, select the class that you will be taking and print that section.

MARINERS COMPASS

This class will teach you how to draft a basic Mariners Compass and then how to sew it together using paper piecing techniques.

Kaleido-Wonder

Learn to construct kaleidoscopes the quick and easy way using the 'stack - n - whack' method developed by Bethany Reynolds. You will also have the option of building some tumbling blocks to use as fillers if your quilt needs to be a bit bigger or just for more interest.

Beginner Braided Table Runner

This is a very easy beginner level quilting project using basic squares. You should be able to get the top done in a day and will get instruction as to finishing it at home.

Slick Circles Table Runner

Have fun playing with free form cutting to create some extraordinary circles. Learn how to cut your sewing time in half by simplifying the appliqué process using Kathy’s unique and exclusive reverse appliqué technique. Kathy`s method is easy enough for the beginner to do and yet intriguing enough for an expert quilter.

Mariner's Blast

You don`t need to be a sailor to enjoy this great workshop. Let Kathy teach you this interesting drafting method and one of her favourite paper piecing techniques. Make a beautiful wall quilt using the traditional “Mariner’s Compass” medallion as the centre and a blast of curved piecing around the outside edge.

Level: All abilities.
Length: Two day class.

Circle the Wagons

This class will drag you out of your comfort zone into the world of free form circles using the fast and easy method that Kathy has devised for doing reverse applique.  Come prepared to step out of your traditional quilting box.

Slick Circles

Two wonderful new techniques! First use the stacked and curved method to make the circles and then learn to do a reverse appliqué technique that has been devised by Kathy. Both can be applied to many other designs leaving you with more ideas than time to do them.

Tumbling Blocks

Have you always wanted to make the tumbling blocks quilt but were daunted by the set-in seams? Sarah Nephew devised a way to strip piece the blocks with no set in seams but Kathy has adapted her own techniques making the process even quicker and easier.

Why? Why Not!

From 9 fat quarters plus 1/2 metre background, make this stunning 3 dimensional looking quilt that Kathy has re-designed eliminating the set-in seams. This is a little more challenging than the tumbling blocks quilt but worth the extra effort.

Landscape

Learn to piece curves the easiest way to make a beautiful small landscape. There will be lots of discussion about designing a landscape, value and color in the class. A great way to showcase those wonderful batiks that you have been saving.

Basic Machine Quilting

12 blocks - 6 hours of fun. We will start with basic straight line quilting and then move into more and more complex quilting treatments. This is not a class to produce the most beautiful quilt in the world but rather a time to begin developing the skills and confidence to tackle the quilts that are taking up space in your studio.

Reverse Applique Pears

Learn a new method of reverse appliqué that will have you creating all kinds of new projects Kathy’s fast and easy way. In class we will make the pears and construct free form curved borders to make a stunning little wall hanging.

Nana's Flower Garden

If you have always wanted to construct the traditional grandmother's flower Garden quilt but were daunted by the hand pieced English paper pieced method, try this new method of machine piecing with no set in seams.

Oh! Log Cabin!

Two traditional blocks that together make a wonderful combination with the directional effect of the Log Cabin paired with the curves of the Drunkards Path. Learn all the tricks and fast and easy ways to make both blocks.

Tree Skirt

A fun and easy tree skirt with majestic fir trees reminiscent of the west coast forest. The techniques used are curved piecing, setting triangles to make a large hexagon and an optional Celtic knot surrounding the trunk of your Christmas tree.

Beginner Basics

Picture
Learn many of the basic skills you need to know to start quilting in this five week introductory class.

Starting with fabric selection and care to putting on the binding and all steps between, including two basic blocks, learn the many different tricks and techniques that Kathy has gathered over the last 28 years of quilting.
